Myths About Waxing

To know waxing is to love waxing, but for those who are new to the treatment, it can sound like an intimidating, nerve-wracking process. Myths are great at making us worry about things that we shouldn’t even stress about. But fear not! We’re here to set the record straight and reassure you that your waxing experience can be excellent.

Why do these myths about waxing exist?

You can’t be the most demanding treatment in the industry without catching a few myths along the way. Since the dawn of social media, everyone has an opinion, a place to share it, and a platform with which to shout it from. Spreading misinformation is simply easier than it's ever been.

Misconceptions created because of media

Waxing gets a lot of flack as it’s the most misunderstood body hair removal method. Social media and news outlets love to discuss waxing as if its rare risks are part of a normal session. There are so many unanswered questions about waxing that the general public has, and without seeking the answers to those questions, it’s very easy to perpetuate incorrect information.

Improper techniques have been applied

For as long as the esthetics industry has existed, there have been plenty of improper techniques that have been used, resulting in less than favorable experiences for. Part of the reason seeking out a reputable wax studio is so important is because you’re working with an item that, when handled incorrectly, can cause injury—you want the best of the best handling your session.

Not enough experienced estheticians until recently

The education required to become an esthetician today has evolved, and as programs to become an esthetician tighten their reins, their students do, too. Prior to the last decade, there weren’t as many deeply experienced and cross trained estheticians. But with the growth of the skincare industry, the demand for esthetic excellence grew, creating exceptional estheticians in their respective specialties.

Myths About Waxing

5 common myths about waxing

From flu season to nutrition, there’s enough myths out there to keep you living in a bubble. Here are the most common waxing myths to be wary of when you’re considering getting waxed.

The hair comes back thicker

Some people have spread myths about unwanted hair growing back faster, thicker and darker after being waxed. But those who are master waxers, and those who have been waxed consistently, know that body hair actually grows back finer, and more sparse! You’ll begin to see those benefits after two or three consecutive waxing sessions.

Ingrown hairs are a thing of the past

Ingrown hairs are alive and well, and while we wish we weren’t here to be the bearer of bad news, they’re still a huge culprit. Waxing is your best route to eradicate ingrown hairs and keep them from forming. Waxing pulls your hairs out directly from the hair root, so there’s a smaller chance of ingrowns being left behind after a wax. You still need to follow proper aftercare if you want them to stay gone.

Waxing will permanently damage the skin

There’s no evidence that waxing would ever permanently damage the skin when done correctly. In fact, since waxing acts as a deep exfoliant, it helps promote healthy skin. Waxing removes dead skin cells and debris, it can act as a skin protectant, preserving the base layer of your skin and keeping your skin cells regenerating. It enhances your natural glow, creates a texture free zone and can even help even skin tone.

Pregnancy affects the waxing process

Waxing is perfectly safe during pregnancy, and you are more than welcome to get the green light from your doctor before scheduling your appointment. Since hair is removed directly from the hair follicle when being waxed, there’s no damage done to the skin. The main concern while getting waxed during pregnancy is the fluctuation of hormones, creating a situation where your skin is far more sensitive to the touch.

A messy experience is expected

There are waxing and shaving myths for every occasion, and we chuckle at this myth since shaving is notoriously far messier than waxing. Waxing is a sterile process, and no one can show you that quite like your esthetician. Not only does your esthetician work relentlessly to create a sanitized station and tools, but the quick process of wax picking up everything on your skin makes it a conveniently clean process.

You cannot get waxed on your period

You can absolutely get waxed while you're on your period! While it will be a little more painful due to heightened sensitivity while menstruating, you are still welcome to get waxed. Make sure to give your wax specialist a heads up, and come prepared with a fresh shower and a new tampon in. Pads and menstrual cups won’t work with bikini or Brazilian waxes, so check in with your specialist if you have any questions that are studio specific.
